The headline change for the 2027 Mazda CX-90 is a new two-row configuration, offered on the 3.3 Turbo Premium Sport and 3.3 Turbo S Premium Sport trims. Every 2027 model also gets updated rear suspension bushings and a revised rear suspension crossmember, which Mazda says is designed to improve passenger comfort over rough pavement. Beyond that, Mazda added four new paint colors, quieted the plug-in hybrid's electric motor and made a few tech and convenience features standard on specific trims.
For drivers here in Erie, that suspension work may be the most useful change of the bunch. After a season of lake-effect snow, plow blades and freeze-thaw cycles, local pavement is rarely kind by spring, and rough pavement is exactly what Mazda says it targeted.
What changed
What is the new two-row configuration?
Mazda's 2027 lineup adds a two-row version of the CX-90 on the 3.3 Turbo Premium Sport and 3.3 Turbo S Premium Sport trims. Its second-row seats have one-touch auto-down, which Mazda highlights for convenience and easier access to the cargo area.
If your household rarely fills a third row, the two-row layout deserves a test drive. Mazda has not announced cargo measurements specific to the two-row models, so the best test is a practical one: bring the hockey bags, the stroller or the cooler you actually haul and see how everything fits.

What changed
Why does the suspension update matter on Erie roads?
All 2027 CX-90 models receive updated rear suspension bushings and a revised rear suspension crossmember. Mazda says the crossmember revision is designed to improve passenger comfort over rough pavement.
It will never be the flashiest line on a window sticker, but anyone who has driven Erie's side streets in March knows how much a settled rear end matters, especially for kids and grandparents riding in back. Our suggestion: once 2027 models arrive, drive one over the bumpiest stretch you can find near the dealership, and if a 2026 is available to compare, drive it on the same stretch right after.
The lineup
What changed on the plug-in hybrid and the individual trims?
A quieter PHEV at low speeds
For 2027, the CX-90 PHEV's electric drive motor now features external insulation material for quieter low-speed operation. You are most likely to notice that in parking lots, school pickup lines and stop-and-go traffic, the low-speed situations the change was aimed at.
The PHEV pairs a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder with an electric motor and a 17.8-kWh battery for 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. Mazda lists an all-electric range of up to 27 miles, and electric driving includes cruising at freeway speeds. If most of your driving around Erie is short errands and school runs, plug in nightly and see how often the engine stays off.
New standard features by trim
- 3.3 Turbo Preferred: standard roof rails.
- Premium Sport: standard Alexa Built-In.
- 3.3 Turbo Premium Plus: Mazda Online Navigation is now standard.
- PHEV Premium Plus: Mazda Online Navigation, with connected navigation and over-the-air updates, plus Alexa Built-In, both now standard.
The full 2027 lineup runs 3.3 Turbo Select, 3.3 Turbo Preferred, 3.3 Turbo Premium Sport, 3.3 Turbo Premium Plus, PHEV Preferred, PHEV Premium Sport, PHEV Premium Plus, 3.3 Turbo S Premium Sport and 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus. At the top, the 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus offers a seven-passenger layout with second-row captain's chairs, a center console and a three-seat third row.
Seating and the Preferred's step up
All 3.3 Turbo models with the third-row bench have room for eight passengers. The 3.3 Turbo Preferred steps up to 21-inch silver metallic wheels and a larger 12.3-inch display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with wireless phone charging. The Preferred also adds roof rails as standard for 2027.
Colors
What are the new 2027 colors?
Mazda introduces four new exterior paint colors for the 2027 CX-90: Navy Blue Mica, Aero Grey Metallic, Melting Copper Metallic and Zircon Sand Metallic. Mazda's premium paint list for 2027 also includes Platinum Quartz Metallic, Polymetal Gray Metallic, Soul Red Crystal Metallic, Machine Gray Metallic, Rhodium White Premium and Artisan Red Premium.
Mazda has not released the complete list of standard colors, so confirm the paint and trim pairing at the time you order. One local tip: in a town that sees as much road salt as Erie, a mid-tone or lighter shade is usually easier to keep looking clean between car washes than a dark one.
Capability
Powertrains, AWD, towing and safety
Every 2027 CX-90 pairs an eight-speed automatic transmission with standard i-Activ AWD. Standard all-wheel drive on every trim is a genuine advantage when a lake-effect band rolls in off Lake Erie.
- 3.3 Turbo: the e-Skyactiv G 3.3 Turbo engine, rated at 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque on regular 87-octane fuel.
- 3.3 Turbo S: up to 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque on recommended 91-octane premium fuel, or 319 horsepower on regular 87 octane.
- PHEV: 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque from the four-cylinder engine and electric motor working together.
The 3.3 Turbo S comes with Mi-Drive, and its Towing mode allows a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds when the SUV is equipped with Mazda Genuine Towing Accessories. Mazda has not announced towing figures for the other engines. For safety, every 2027 CX-90 has 10 airbags.

What Mazda has not announced yet

- EPA fuel economy for the 2027 lineup.
- Towing ratings for the turbo and plug-in hybrid trims below the Turbo S.
- Cargo measurements for the new two-row models.
- Crash-test ratings for the new model.
Key details
A 2026 now, or hold out for the 2027?
You want to be driving soon
If you want to be driving soon, a 2026 with the features you want is still a smart buy. Write down the seating layout and features that matter most, then shop the 2026 models against that list.
A two-row SUV or a softer ride is the goal
If you have been weighing a two-row SUV, or if ride comfort over broken pavement is near the top of your list, the 2027 is worth waiting to drive. Plan a back-road loop for when the new models reach Erie.
A Preferred or Premium Plus is on your short list
Shoppers eyeing a Preferred or Premium Plus trim should also compare equipment, because roof rails and Mazda Online Navigation moved into the standard column on specific 2027 trims. Line up a 2026 equipment list next to the 2027 changes above, then decide which model year covers what you want.
